More than 35 million people become disabled each year due to various neurologic and orthopaedic conditions and injuries. Most of these people will need rehabilitation, a process of learning, relearning and practicing skills in order to be as self-sufficient as possible.
The Rehabilitation Institute offers an extensive array of rehabilitative services for individuals with activity limitations and is licensed by the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitation Services as the only comprehensive medical rehabilitation facility in the Pensacola area. The program focuses on returning the patient to maximum independence under the guidance of a team of physicians specializing in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation and supported by a professional staff. The success of the program is measured by utilizing a national data bank system (Uniform Data System). The data demonstrates improvement from admission to discharge and follow-up and the Institute consistently meets or exceeds the regional and national rehabilitation standard.
Additionally, the Rehabilitation Institute provides an in-depth education program for family members and caregivers so that the patient is well prepared upon discharge. The success of the family education programs is reflected in the fact that 79% or more of all rehab patients are discharged home.
The Rehabilitation Institute is a 58-bed comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation hospital consisting of three distinct units: A 10-bed Brain Injury Unit; A 16-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit; and A 32-bed General Rehabilitation Unit for patients recovering from CVA's, amputations, arthritis and other neurological or orthopaedic conditions. The Rehabilitation Institute is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and is the only comprehensive medical rehabilitation hospital in the Pensacola service area. The Institute is also a designated Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center for the State of Florida.
The Rehabilitation Institute is adjacent to West Florida Hospital's 400-bed acute care hospital offering rehabilitation services early in the patient's recovery. As a result of this close proximity, various medical support services are readily available when needed, including emergency medical.

History
The concept for The Rehabilitation Institute originated in the early 1970's when several community leaders recognized the need for a comprehensive rehabilitation hospital in Northwest Florida. In December 1977, a 38-bed facility opened on Palafox Street. By 1983, the need for expansion of the facility led to its purchase by West Florida Hospital, and construction began on a new 58-bed facility. In October 1984, the Institute began operations in its newly expanded facility and has served the Northwest Florida area effectively ever since. The Rehabilitation Institute features private and semi-private accommodations, patient lounges/recreation rooms with private outdoor courtyards, large swimming pool, gymnasium, fully-equipped exercise clinic, and specialty treatment rooms, each offering many therapeutic and recreational opportunities. Recently-expanded facilities include a separate building which houses HealthWorks and offers occupational and sports rehabilitation as well as general fitness programs. As the area's only accredited rehabilitation hospital, The Rehabilitation Institute is proud to have brought excellence in rehabilitation care to the Pensacola area for more than 30 years.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Rehabilitation Institute is to provide comprehensive inpatient and/or outpatient rehabilitation services to individuals with activity limitations, so as to maximize their quality of life by improving physical function, enhancing social interaction and communication skills, assisting with community re-entry, and where possible, promoting academic and/or vocational pursuits.

Program Admission
Candidates for admission to all levels of care will receive an onsite pre-admission evaluation by a physician, clinical nurse liaison or other members of the staff. The patient's medical, physical, cognitive, behavioral, and social status will be evaluated for the patient's appropriateness for improvement. The patient's financial status and need for resource assistance will be assessed. A referral will be made to the appropriate agency as indicated. The family, referring physician and external case manager will be consulted as needed.
Outpatient referrals are accepted from healthcare providers in accordance with Florida law.
